Carlos Santiago Andreo, a professor of biochemistry in the department of biochemical and pharmaceutical sciences at the National University of Rosario (NUR), Argentina, and a 2005 TWAS Fellow, passed away on 17 January 2026.

He served as director of the Centre for Photosynthetic and Biochemical Studies (2006–2017) director of the Rosario Scientific and Technological Centre, and was a full professor of biological chemistry with the Faculty of Biochemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences of NUR.
He was also president of the Argentine Society for Research in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, from 2014 to 2015.
Andreo’s scientific interests included plant physiology and molecular biology, photosynthesis, and enzymology. In 1995, TWAS awarded him the TWAS Prize in Biology.
His work has earned recognition from some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, including the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Organization of American States, the Commission of European Communities, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, and the Fulbright Foundation.
He was also honoured by receiving the Bernardo Houssay Prize for Young Investigators, the Luis Leloir Accésit Award, and later the Bernardo Houssay Award as a Consolidated Investigator in Biological Sciences.
Beyond his research, he has played an active role serving on numerous committees within the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), the National Commission for University Evaluation and Accreditation (CONEAU), and several national universities.
