The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS), founded in 1983, is a programme unit of UNESCO. Its principal aim is to promote scientific capacity and excellence for sustainable development in developing countries. Today, TWAS has more than 1,440 elected fellows — some of the world’s most accomplished scientists and engineers — representing 112 countries; 13 of them are Nobel laureates.

With its partners, it has graduated over 1,230 PhDs and supported more than 980 postdoctoral fellowships. The Academy also bestowed over 1,200 prizes, awarded over 2,800 research grants, trained over 750 individuals in science diplomacy, and supported over 1,400 exchange visits.

TWAS has five Regional Partners that help organize activities and disseminate information: in Alexandria, Egypt; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Beijing, China; Pretoria, South Africa; and Bangalore, India.
