The Islamic Development Bank is a multilateral development bank, working to improve the lives of people they serve by promoting social and economic development in Member countries and Muslim communities worldwide, delivering impact at scale.

Its mission is to promote comprehensive human development, with a focus on the priority areas of alleviating poverty, improving health, promoting education, improving governance, and bringing prosperity to the people.

In 2017, TWAS and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) signed a memorandum of understanding to develop joint activities in the following key areas: fellowships and grants, and workshops.

  • Fellowships and grants include a programme of postdoctoral fellowships for young researchers in the least developed countries that are members of the Bank, and grants for joint research projects in the Bank's member countries. The research area in which grants are assigned change each year: in 2019, it was an area related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals; and in 2020 and 2021, it was related to the COVID-19 pandemic
  • High-level workshops are held in science diplomacy and science communication.

In 2021, IsDB provided support to TWAS Fifteenth General Conference (1–4 November), and implemented, along with TWAS, a programme offering support to refugee and displaced scientists from IsDB member countries.
