Yang, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and one of co-founders of Beijing Institute of Genomics, CAS (2007), and BGI-genomics (2002). Yang and his BGI team, together with collaborators all over the world, have made a significant contribution to the International Human Genome Project (HGP, 1999-2003), the International HapMap Project (HapMap, 2002-2006), International 1000 Genomes Project (G1K, 2008-2012), the International Cancer Genome Project (ICGP, 2008-2010), the international collaborations on Yeast Genome Redesign and Synthesis (Sc2.0, 2011-2017), the Earth Biogenome Project (EBP, 2017 - ), and other human, animals, plants, and microorganismsomics research, with more than 600 publications in the internationally prestigious journals, including more than 200 in Cell, Science, Nature and its series, with an H-index=162 (August 20, 2026).
Yang has been elected as a member of European Molecular Biology Organization, and The African Academy of Sciences, an foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of Germany, India, Ukraine, the United States of America and the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. Yang chairs TWAS Advisory Committee on COVID-19.
